Crawling On

The future seems to me no unified dream but a mince pie, long in the baking, never quite done.

Who can predict the future? Who can say for certain that if we do "this thing" then "that thing" will happen, if it hasn't happened before? Civilization is a grand experiment, an improvisation, so uncertain, so unpredictable and in such a state of potential chaos that people come up with some of the most absurd beliefs to try to make sense out of it. They want to draw circles around everything and put ideas and actions into little boxes, like hieroglyphics, and then put labels on them.

I listen to all kinds of music and I amuse myself sometimes by wondering what composers of the past would think about how music has developed over the years. Johann Sebastian Bach was an unqualified genius and a very prolific composer of the 18th Century. I wonder what he would think of the music of Richard Strauss, or George Gershwin, or Led Zeppelin. Has music developed the way musicians expected it to, foretold it would and, in some cases, guaranteed it would?

I don't ;like Rap Music. It doesn't matter that I don't like it, it's what we have these days. I wouldn't have guessed it was coming. A lot of people don't like it, but I'm just an old fogy so I'll stay out of the fray.

I was talking with my friend Marty last night, and he made an observation which I had never thought about. The First World War was not called The First World War until after the Second World War. It was known as The War To End All Wars, and some people actually believed that, most people probably. At least it was the hope. But alas, along came World War Two. And after all the surrenders were complete World War Three started. There is always a war going on somewhere in the world, from the bushes of the Amazon forest to the deserts of the Middle East. Who predicted that?

The snail I wrote about a few days ago may have made it to the Ark, that was his destination, but he couldn't have known what he was going to encounter along the way.

Selfishness rules. Many people want their little boxes and don't seem to care about peace, disarmament, the growth of science, art, education and culture on the earth, an improved society, a greater more advanced civilization, a better world. Those are definite dreams and destinations for the rest of us to crawl toward. But we have no idea what challenges, changes and dilemmas we will face on the way. The pie is still in the oven.

Thank you for all the Valentine's Day greetings.
I'm getting a lot of interesting mangled cliches so I'm leaving the quiz up for another day.

"A stitch in time is worth two in the bush."

Your assignment is to take two or more grand old sayings, cliches, sage saws or famous quotes and cobble (clobber) them together to make a new and wiser adage or utter nonsense as in the above.

Enter as often as you wish. The decision of the ornery, biased judge is final.

Good luck.

The composers of the past would be surprised at the way we make music today. Some might not like the direction, but most would love our fancy dancy toys. I've often wondered how they would feel about the way their music is honored and used today.

How gratifying it would be, to discover your art continues to appear in the mainstreams of today. I know the people of today go with the times but some of us savor the songs of yesterday.

The sounds keep fresh in my happy mind, in that nice cool place I call memory. Good thing I've always fancied a wide variety of music to enjoy.

You make great points about war and how it continues. I too have these feelings about the subject and feel as you.

I hope before man wipes itself out we as a society would find peace. I think if most people could find some real peace within, there would be less hate.Less war inside the human shell we call a body.

Less need to fight with other people with concerns of possessions, territories, and power. Because if we find peace within, we could love each other a little more.

I know there is evil and corruption in this mad world. Still my heart has sang the songs of hope for as long as I can remember. My mind has composed wonderful notes to share with the world.

Maybe it is a child's dream or a fools idea but it gives me tiny fragments of peace within. By the end of my human song I might be able to make something positive out of the pieces.

Then pass it to my child and my child's children, so they might add to it. Then when humanity is ready to listen, they can display it in the mankind's museum of wars.

Once again I must apologize for my long babbling breath. May your heart and mind be happy and your days be kind.

"To Be or Not To Be... Is In The Eye of The Beholder!"

A mixed up quote... or is it? It fit's with your post here... I might think.... Life is what happens when we blink... We have wars of all sizes and in all places... inside ourselves is sometimes the trickiest to conquer. As for music... it dances through the air without wings into the minds of those that hear. Even silence can dance...
Thank you my friend for always challenging me to go beyond what I think is, to find what might be there... Charge on to the battles of life and may we listen to the music of our souls delight.
Blessings to you and yours. Love and Light, Nina P

If I don't know the words or understand and making it out, I don't listen to it. I haven't listen to any in a while. Love the entry. Take care! Nancy

How very sad for everyone. Good thoughtful post, as usual, DB.

We certainly live in very unique times. It would be very interesting to know what people think of us 100 years from now.
