Let Me Shake My Hand

If you make friends with yourself you will never be alone.

Many years ago I knew a woman, I won't tell you her name, who had definitely made up her mind, with no encouragement from me whatsoever, that I was going to be her next husband. I found her neither interesting nor attractive. Besides a woman who lines up husbands like pictures in a hallway is suspicious to most men anyway.

She hung around the theatre where I worked making herself obtrusive and obvious. Romance was certainly on her mind. It wasn't on mine. When her advances were met with no reaction from me I know she got frustrated. One day she said "Don't you ever get lonely?" To which I replied "No" which wasn't true of course. Who doesn't get lonely? One can be lonely at a dinner table full of family and friends. I went on to say "I keep excellent company with myself. I agree with almost everything I say. I don't bitch at myself for leaving dirty dishes in the sink or clothes on the floor. And when I come home everybody there is glad to see me."

There are advantages to living alone, as I do. For one thing you can be your own best friend. I get very angry with myself when I do a stupid thing, much angrier than I would get with someone else. But I can quickly forgive myself and hold no grudge.

I can plan all sorts of exciting adventures and set wonderful goals for myself, but my friend listens quietly and then says "Sure, sure, Buddy. You're just dreaming. Forget about it."

If I do something good I'm the first one to step up to congratulate myself for it.

If I'm having bad memories my friend convinces me to stop thinking about them. If I'm having good ones he shares the experiences with me. If I forget to take the shopping list, like today, he's right there to remind me what was on it. I my heart is broken he heaves a big sigh and weeps for me.

All in all he's a good guy. I'm glad I know him.

I'm glad I know you, too, DB =)! Living alone, sometimes I won't see someone else for days (especially when I am not feeling well). That is when I start to really annoy myself and my thinking starts to get really screwy. LOL Hugs to you! xox

D, What a healthy attitude to have! Good for you! I'm so glad you like yourself and accept yourself. You seem to have come to a place in your life of peace. I find that excellent!

That crazy woman -- I don't know what she was thinking, LOL. If someone does not find her in the running to be a spouse , she should let it go. Does she not have any dignity -- like dignity for herself? One should never pine for someone who does not want them back. She should realize her own worth, and not throw herself at someone who does not want her in the way she wants them.

Likewise, as you say, you should choose whomever you want to be with. And if at this time in your life the best person to spend most of your time with is YOU, than so be it -- you have found most EXCELLENT company!

Hugs to you, buddy,

krissy knox :)

Oh, I forgot to answer your question about the decade.

Here's John's answer:
The Democrats will lose control of the US House and Senate. Obama will be a one term president. We will have a GOP president in next, who will have been elected in part by the help of the Tea Party Movement. Republicans will be in power for awhile (if they don't blow it -- by becoming too progressive).

Here's my answer: I'm not sure what truly amazing thing will happen this decade, but I believe it will definitely have something to do with technology. Our advances are coming so quickly, even in the last several years alone. I think one of the things that could happen, perhaps, is everyone will get tracked by a number so that their daily doings and whereabouts will be known. Perhaps this will be done with an implanted chip (on one's body?). If you think this is nuts, I have seen, on documentaries, that this is occuring in countries other than the US -- although i think it may be done at this time only for political prisoners and not the average citizen of a country. This could get into a problem i think, like a big brother thing. Why? Bc if you start to track political prisoners bc of their values, polititics and opinions, who's to say whose political opinion is correct? I think it was in Iran (not sure) that people were getting chipped after protesting the dictator there who is not for democracy, and is for killing the people to keep his power. this is WRONG. they have a tracking chip on them and now will be forever followed by their country when they did nothing wrong but protest an evil dictator. wrong... if you ever post this, db, LOL, i'll try to find the documentaries via youtube or somewhere that documents these tracking implants, i'm not making this stuff up, LOL, in case you think i'm crazy or paranoid...

I'm hoping that something else amazing that will happen this decade will be a spiritual renewal of some kind -- and that people will come to know that Jesus is real and is Lord, and want to follow His ways. Many say Jesus is coming back soon. Soon for Him could be this decade or in a thousand years, bc, what does soon mean to the Lord? Soon for Him COULD be a thousand years and not this decade -- who knows? So while I don't think He will most likely come back in the 2010's or 20teens (not sure though), I do believe Jesus will give us some kind of spiritual renewal and awakening, and let those who don't know about Him know Him, and those who do will be able to ammend their ways and come to know the Lord more fully.

Okay, perhaps we'll have technology and the Lord at the same time I guess, then, this decade! This should be a fun decade i think!

No doubt about it, in order to be successful at living alone, you really do have to become your own best friend. There are terrific rewards, many of which you did mention and I find so enjoyable. I am the envy of some and the object of pity from others. Like who is so pathetic as to have to live alone. I look at it this way in that some of us are very fortunate to have found this lifestyle ( or to have had it find us) and to have learned to be comfortable with it. There is an art to living alone and not everyone can be successful at it. For those who are, the rewards speak for themselves.
